You need to understand your Work Health and Safety (WHS) obligations and responsibilities, set up your workers’ compensation insurance arrangements and be ready to support an employee if they are injured at work.

Comcare is the national work health and safety and workers’ compensation authority. They are a government regulator, insurer, claims manager and scheme administrator. They also partner with workers, their employers and unions to keep workers to promote and enable safe and healthy work.

Understand your obligations and responsibilities under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (WHS Act).

The WHS Act imposes duties on entities and officials to ensure workers are provided with a safe and healthy workplace and that risks to health and safety are eliminated so far as is reasonably practicable

Your entity will need to ensure that it has systems, resources and processes in place to meet these duties. Your entity will be required to pay a regulatory contribution to Comcare.

Establish your workers’ compensation insurance under the Safety, Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1988 (SRC Act).

The Comcare scheme provides a comprehensive package of benefits to assist an employee to recover from a workplace injury. Your entity will be required to pay a workers’ compensation premium to Comcare.

 

Comcare will allocate an account manager to your entity.

Understand your obligations and responsibilities as a Rehabilitation Authority under the SRC Act.

Your entity is responsible for managing the return to work of an injured employee. Workplace rehabilitation is a managed process that involves early intervention with appropriate, adequate and timely services based on assessed needs. You will need to put case manager delegations in place.
